4. Typical Application Cases
The value of a high-voltage differential probe is different in different systems. The following cases reflect how it is used in device testing, system debugging, safety validation, and high-side measurement tasks.
4.1 Case 1: SiC MOSFET Switching Characteristic Test
SiC MOSFETs often operate above 100kHz with switching-edge speed reaching tens of kV/μs or higher. When measuring Vds with a high-voltage differential probe, engineers can accurately obtain turn-on delay, turn-off delay, rise time, fall time, overshoot, and voltage spikes, providing a basis for driver optimization and thermal design.
4.2 Case 2: Three-Phase Inverter Output Voltage Measurement
Three-phase inverter outputs are PWM waveforms rich in harmonics, and each phase can float with respect to the others. A high-voltage differential probe can suppress common-mode interference and accurately reproduce phase-to-phase and phase-to-reference waveforms for modulation validation, harmonic analysis, and dead-time evaluation.
4.3 Case 3: Electric Vehicle Powertrain Test
EV powertrains operate at 300-800V or higher, making safety critical. High-voltage differential probes can be used for battery-pack voltage, DC-bus ripple, inverter output voltage, and switching waveform measurements, while avoiding short-circuit risk introduced by oscilloscope grounding.
4.4 Case 4: Primary-Side Measurement in SMPS
The primary side of a switch-mode power supply operates under high voltage, high frequency, and floating conditions. A differential probe can safely measure MOSFET drain-source voltage, transformer primary voltage, and current-sense resistor voltage, helping engineers analyze switching loss, snubber performance, and EMI behavior.
4.5 Case 5: IGBT Module Double Pulse Test
Double pulse testing is a standard method for evaluating IGBT switching performance. Using a differential probe for Vce and a current probe for collector current, engineers can extract switching time and loss parameters and further evaluate SOA, thermal behavior, and driver settings.
